The Big Nude
from the painting by William McClure Brown

An ochre nude sunbathes on the beach
her shoulder and pelvis
pressing two hollows in the sand,
filled with rose madder shadow.

The skyward line of her hip
fills the shallow curve of the horizon. Sky runs along her thigh.

The beach is flat, the ocean simple.
Two red sailboats drift on the skyline
red triangles of sail on the water,
one with a blue moon
the other a yellow sun.

Her hair curls sun-burnt orange
over her shoulders,
Text Box: down her back.

She lies on a beach that will never see moons,

An ochre hourglass turned on its side
and filled with rosy shadow,
her flesh so many colours it breathes
like light through a rainbow.
