Ironically enough, William became well known, especially in the U.K. and Europe, as a narrative painter. There is always a storyline behind his pieces that needs to be puzzled out. Though his handwriting was almost illegible at times, he was well known for writing letters punctuated by sketches, which he continued to the outside of the envelop. He had a knack for entertaining others with
